Космос Кодекс (Cosmos Codex) 2013
in-situ wall drawings, mixed mediums
4 x 12 x 8 meters
30th Lubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts,
Moderna galerija (Museum of Modern Art), Ljubljana, Slovenia
Космос Кодекс (Cosmos Codex) is a wall drawing/reference materials collage. The title refers to the documents and reference materials I use to make all my work. Elements include vintage NASA publications, engineering guides for American and Russian spacecraft design, technical reports for manned spaceflight, space junk mitigation and American and Russian launch preparations, thermal insulation material, original ink drawings, watercolor collages and Russian textiles. The digital prints are sourced from helmet cameras during spacewalks (U.S. and Russian), launch pad cameras, satellite photography, hand-held digital photography by Astronauts and Cosmonauts during spacewalks, telemetry visualization, VR modeling, and earth observation video and live NASA TV, and Roscosmos TV broadcast screen shots. The overall composition refers to "the big board", or the oversized, multi-panel display screens in mission control centers. The black and silver linear "vector" drawings within each rectangular section, connect the images and information while referencing the architecture, mathematics and design elements of these various subjects. The floor piece is composed of 365 photographs of astronomical, atmospheric and planetary observation images. 1 image for each day of the year represents time, the big board represents space and the vitrine contains our understanding of living, working and studying the cosmos.
